if you need truth from someone…

If you need the truth from someone, it is best to create safe space for disagreement.  The flow of truth is dammed up too often when one party is known to react with rage at “wrong answers.”

If you need truth from someone, it is best to be honest with them.  Offering dishonesty while expecting truth is an abuse of trust.  Offering dishonesty while expecting dishonesty is not a relationship, but a game or a sickness.  It cannot make your life or anyone else’s better.

If you need truth from someone, it is best to abandon your “right” to be offended.  Most of the time, the (unpleasant) truth that someone is sharing is not primarily (or perhaps even at all) aimed at hurting you.  When you consistently get your back up about truth from another’s vantage point, making it “about you,” that is a barrier to truth.

If you need truth from someone, it is best to “feed on” truth all the time, rather than filling your self with all that is not connected to truth.  A mind and spirit that are regularly fed truth become more adept at recognizing its absence.

If you need truth from someone, it is best to personally invest in them.  Someone who knows you care – because you proved it by your actions – is much more likely to offer truth, even when it is hard truth.

If you need truth from someone, ask yourself why you need that truth.  Is it to help you in helping them?  Is it for the growth of the relationship?  Or do you just need things to go the way you want them to go?  Is this just a control issue for you?

For Christ Followers:
If you need truth from someone, it is best to practice what fills you with the Holy Spirit:  prayer, obedience, spiritual disciplines, time in the Word.  Holy Spirit offers discernment and often goes before us to open doors of communication.
